Introduction: Motivation is one of the most critical challenges affecting academic progress. This study aimed to compare academic motivation and its related factors among basic sciences dental students of Islamic Azad University of Isfahan and Kashan University of Medical Sciences.

| Methods: In this analytical study, 141 students, including 47 students from Kashan University and 94 students from Isfahan Azad University, entered the study applying a convenient sampling method in 2023. In order to measure academic motivation, the Academic Motivation Scale including three dimensions of external, internal and lack of motivation was used. Volunteer students filled in online questionnaires. Data were analyzed using T-test and regression model (p<0.05) |
| Results: Most dental students of Isfahan Azad University (72.3%) and Kashan University (89.4%) had high level of academic motivation. Academic motivation of students of Kashan University (147.87) was higher than that of students of Isfahan Azad University (137.8) (p<0.001). No significant association existed between demographic factors and academic motivation among students of Isfahan Azad University (p> 0.05). However, among students of Kashan University, academic motivation showed a significant relationship with students’ grade point average (p=0.026), female gender (p=0.001), non-native residential status (p=0.011) and father’s education (P=0.017). |
| Conclusion: The higher academic motivation of dental students of Kashan University is probably due to their better university admission ranks, and higher personal capacities of these students. Given the importance of academic motivation in students' academic achievement, it is necessary that university officials pay more attention to factors related to academic motivation, especially in Azad university. |
