Introduction: Many nurses when starting their work in practice find that the expectations of the organization are not in accordance with their abilities. They notice that the values and ideals of academic environment are inconsistent with clinical setting. Thus, this study conducted to evaluate the discrepancy in role expectation during transition from nursing student to practice nurse as perceived by novice nurses in South East of Iran.
Methods: In this cross-sectional study, all novel nurses who employed in hospitals supervised by Kerman University of Medical Sciences were recruited. Novice nurses perception of discrepancy in role expectation was measured through a questionnaire. The data were analyzed by descriptive and analytic statistics and SPSS19 software.
Results: Practice expectations in all items and categories were more in clinical setting compare to academic setting. novice nurses perception of academic and clinical role expectations mainly were not in line with each other indicating inconsistent opinion about what professional nurse is expected to done. Novice nurses who had the chance to choose their work place had perceived less discrepancy in the category of “Effective management of rapidly changing situations” (P=0.02), “Monitoring and Ensuring the Quality of Healthcare Practices” (P=0.01), and “Organizational and Work-role Competencies” (P=0.006) compare to others.
Conclusion: This study suggests that externships or prolonged clinical experiences where graduate nurses are exposed to the realities of the complex healthcare system may facilitate novel nurses’ role transition.
