Background Academic burnout in students is related to their poor academic performance. The present study aims to explore the factors related to the academic burnout of dental students in Yazd, Iran.
Methods This is a qualitative study. Data were collected through in-depth and semi-structured interviews with 15 students from the Dental School of Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences in Yazd. The interviews were transcribed after recording, the statements related to the purpose of the study were extracted and coded, and the key factors were classified. Data were analyzed by the content analysis method.
Results The analysis led to extracting four main themes including professors’ academic/behavioral weaknesses, dissatisfaction with the faculty conditions, personal problems, and social issues. The classification of factors showed the prominent role of organizational factors (professors and faculty) in students’ academic burnout. 
Conclusion The results of this study can help the selected university officials and faculty members in reducing the academic burnout of dental students.
