In medical education, time pressure, high information loads, and long work shifts have made insufficient sleep common among medical learners. Learners often sacrifice sleep for additional study time, although the ability to learn itself is strongly dependent on sleep quality.
Basic neuroscience findings indicate that sleep, contrary to common belief, is not a passive state but an active process involved in regulating synaptic balance. During wakefulness, learning experiences are accompanied by synaptic strengthening across different brain regions. One influential framework is the synaptic homeostasis hypothesis. According to this hypothesis, a relative and proportionate downscaling of synaptic strength during sleep, particularly slow-wave sleep, may prevent synaptic saturation, improve the signal-to-noise ratio of neural activity, reduce cerebral energy consumption, and preserve the capacity for subsequent learning [1]. This process is associated with sleep-specific changes in the neurochemical milieu, neuronal firing patterns, and reduced input from external stimuli.
