Introduction: The role of medical students and clinical residents as active members of the academic community is highly significant. They can play a crucial role in managing errors and mistakes in educational institutions. This study aimed to explore the perspectives of medical students and clinical residents regarding the disclosure of colleagues' errors in educational and therapeutic hospitals in Jahrom County in 2024.
Methods: In this descriptive-cross-sectional study, 101 medical students and clinical residents from educational and therapeutic hospitals in Jahrom County in 2024 were enrolled. Data collection tools included a demographic questionnaire and a medical error disclosure questionnaire.
Results: The average score of willingness to report another physician's error and the tendency to disclose medical errors was higher among medical students (externs and interns) compared to other academic levels. Among the factors influencing medical error disclosure, the item "preventing the repetition of errors by the physician and other colleagues" was identified as the most significant factor. In contrast, the least influential factor was "strengthening the physician-patient relationship." Among the factors affecting error reduction, "standardizing physicians' working hours per day" and "reducing physicians' workload" were reported as the most effective measures in minimizing medical errors.
Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate that the disclosure of colleagues' errors in Jahrom’s educational and therapeutic hospitals is influenced by various factors, including academic level and gender. Additionally, factors such as standardizing physicians' working hours and reducing their workload can significantly decrease errors. Therefore, to improve error disclosure and reduce errors in hospitals, it is essential to foster a culture where students and faculty members can report errors without fear of punishment.
