Background This study aims to investigate the relationship of participatory learning and its components with scientific spirit in medical students of Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences (MUMS).
Methods  This descriptive-correlational study was conducted on 170 medical students in basic sciences at MUMS who were selected by random sampling method using Morgan’s table. The tools were Stephen’s participatory learning scale (with 3 dimensions of group dynamics, project works, and feedback) and the scientific spirit scale developed by Ghasemi and Jarallahi with 21 items. The data were analyzed in SPSS v.20 software using descriptive and inferential statistics.
Results The overall mean score of participatory learning was 43.98, indicating that there was some participatory learning tendency in the organization. The mean score of scientific spirit was 74.68, indicating a high scientific spirit. Scientific spirit had a significant positive relationship with participatory learning and its components (P<0.001). The scientific spirit and group dynamics component of participatory learning were significantly higher in female students than in male students.
Conclusion There is a positive significant correlation between scientific spirit and participatory learning among basic science students. Female students of MUMS have a significantly higher scientific spirit.
