Introduction:
The students are one of the most valuable assets of any country, and their attitude toward their field of study and future career can be used as a good guide to improve the quality of educational services. The aim of this study was to determine the laboratory sciences students’ attitude toward their field of study and future career in Alborz University of Medical Sciences.
Methods:
This cross-sectional descriptive study was performed on 117 laboratory science students. Questionnaires including demographic questions and main research questions were used to collect data. To analyze the collected data, SPSS20 software, descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA and correlation analysis were used.
Results:
The average of student’s age was 20.66±1.43, which 29.1% were male and 70.9% were female. Average score of student’s attitude towards field of study was 42.59±8.19 (p <0.05), 43% had a positive attitude and 57% had a negative attitude towards their field of study. Also, average score of student’s attitude towards future career was 13.45±3.50 (p <0.000), 35.1% of students had a positive attitudes and 64.9% had a negative attitudes towards future careers.
Conclusion:
According to the results, most students didn’t have the necessary awareness about their field of study. In order to better understand and to improve the students' perspectives, necessary counseling should be provided to get better acquainted with the university majors. Also, ensuring job security and creating suitable job position for graduates of this field are appropriate strategies to strengthen students' attitudes towards their future careers.
