Introduction: Disrespectful behaviors in the workplace among nurses is an important challenge with wide consequences for healthcare systems. The present study was conducted with the aim of investigating the occurrence of disrespectful behaviors in the work environment among nurses working in Jahrom hospitals in 2023.
Methods: In this cross-sectional descriptive study, 240 nurses working in educational and therapeutic hospitals of Jahrom city participated in 2024. Data collection tools in this study include; Demographic information questionnaire and nursing scale incivility questionnaire. Data analysis was done using spss version 21 software and descriptive statistics and inferential statistical tests at a significance level of P<0.05.
Results: The average age of the nurses participating in the study was 31.97±6.99 years. The average disrespectful behavior was reported as 2.42 ± 0.70. Among the different dimensions of unsafe behavior, respectively, after the nurse’s communication with the supervisor (2.80±0.89) and the nurse’s communication with colleagues (2±0.68) have the lowest rate of occurrence of unsafe behavior and the highest rate of occurrence of unsafe behavior for the staff was nursing. The amount of unsafe behavior and its dimensions in the bedside was at an average level. The results showed that there was a difference between the employment status and the occurrence of unsafe behavior in communication with the supervisor (P=0.03) and the occurrence of unsafe behavior in communication with patients and companions (P=0.02). Also, there is a difference between the department and disrespectful behaviors in the work environment (P=0.04) and the incidence of disrespectful behavior in communication with colleagues (P=0.008) and the incidence of disrespectful behavior in communication with patients and companions (P=0.04). had Also, there was a difference between the number of patients (P=0.02) and shift (P=0.005) with the occurrence of unsafe behavior in communication with colleagues.
Discussion: The results of this study showed that the amount of unsafe behavior and its dimensions in the hospital were at an average level. Therefore, education trustees and nursing managers should take the necessary measures to improve such behaviors through professional training and by creating opportunities for professional and personal development of nurses. On the other hand, future studies can take effective steps by conducting interventional studies and using new methods to improve the communication dimensions of nurses with each other.
