Introduction
One of the constructs of the work relationships is job involvement, which can increase motivation in workplace and ultimately improve work performance. Most scholars believe that job involvement and its consequences can lead to organizational success. In recent years, special attention has been paid to job involvement in Iran. Studies conducted in Iran show that people in different professions have reported a low or moderate level of job involvement. Considering the importance of job conflict, this study aims to assess the job involvement status of anesthesia interns of Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences (AJUMS) in Ahvaz, Iran.
Methods
This is a descriptive cross-sectional study. The study population consists of all students in anesthesia internship from AJUMS in 2022. The data collection tools included the Lodahl and Kejner’s job involvement scale with 20 items and a demographic form surveying age, gender, marital status, and clinical work experience. Data analysis was performed in SPSS software, version 16 using descriptive and inferential statistics.
Results
The mean age of the participants was 22.4 years. The mean score of job involvement was 44.87±8.15, indicating a moderate level. The mean job involvement in females (44.5) was more than in males (44.92), in students aged 26-30 years (46.2) more than in students aged 20-25 years (44.62), in married students more than in singles (married: 48.8, singles: 44.14), and in students with a clinical work experience of 1 day to 6 months (46.31) more than in students without a clinical work experience (43.43). According to independent t test results, there was no significant difference in job involvement based on demographic factors of age, gender, marital status, and clinical work experience (P>0.05).
Conclusion
The job involvement of anesthesia interns from AJUMS is moderate, not high. Therefore, there is a need to improve their job involvement using educational programs provided periodically and continuously for anesthesia students. Since there are many factors affecting job involvement of these students, the authorities in Iran should pay attention to identify these factors and take steps to improve their job involvement.
